Platinum Bushvelder newspaper  – A major University of Cape Town study has revealed shocking vaping levels among South African learners, and experts warn the trend is spreading faster than expected.

  • 16.8% of high school learners currently vape.
  • In Grade 8, around 9% already use vapes.
  • By Grade 12, usage rises to 29.5% — nearly one in three matrics.

Researchers caution that vaping is now filtering into primary schools, where younger children are increasingly found with e-cigarettes.

Most teen vapers use nicotine-based products, with many showing strong signs of addiction, including vaping shortly after waking up. Despite common myths, vaping is not harmless — health risks include lung damage, nicotine dependence, and negative effects on learning, mood, and concentration.

Parents, teachers, and communities are urged to speak openly with young people, recognise the signs, and seek help early if a child is already dependent.
