Rescue in Rising Waters
Platinum Bushvelder newspaper | Phalaborwa — One of several towns across Limpopo, alongside parts of Mpumalanga, was struck by disaster last week when relentless heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in Phalaborwa and surrounding areas. The floods left a trail of devastation: homes damaged or destroyed, families displaced, and — most heartbreakingly — lives lost.
At least 18 people have been confirmed dead in Limpopo due to the recent severe flooding, with several others still missing.
In response to the crisis, Thaba Fire & Rescue from Thabazimbi swiftly deployed a specialised team to Phalaborwa, where they assisted with rescue and relief operations from 15 January 2026 to 17 January 2026. Working shoulder to shoulder with other emergency services, the team helped evacuate residents, assess damage, and provide critical support to affected communities during an exceptionally difficult time.
Their presence was a powerful reminder that in moments of crisis, distance dissolves – and solidarity steps in. Thaba Fire & Rescue continues to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to serving communities in times of need.
