Illegal dumping a major concern… with no solution?

Northam – The community of Northam, which falls under the jurisdiction and service of the Thabazimbi Local Municipality, is fed up!

One could say that the community must be held accountable for the illegal dump activities – but there are no legal dump options available. The previous dumping site was closed a while back already, due to the municipality owing too much to keep the dump site operational.

This leaves the community with no option but to dump illegally. Some community members even set their rubbish alight to get rid of it – which on its own has serious implications.

On Wednesday, 13 September, an open meeting was called and attended by councillors representing Northam as well as councillors from the Thabazimbi Local Municipality. The seriousness of the dumping activities, the health risks thereof and the complete dissatisfaction with the municipality in this regard were discussed.

In an interview with the Platinum Bushvelder newspaper, Abdul James, resident and business owner of Northam said: “Firstly, the municipality should open a dumping site in Northam. Secondly, the municipality must provide a free and discreet dumping site. It should be easily accessible but not visible to visitors entering or exiting Northam. I own a take-away and quick-shop in Northam extension 6. The rubbish is everywhere and it smells rotten – chasing away my customers.”

Another business owner in Northam, who would like to stay anonymous said that the rubbish makes him feel ashamed to be a Northam resident. “The rubbish everywhere is horrendous, a health risk and we still pay our municipal taxes – it makes no sense!”
