Man caught with rhino horns

Modimolle/ Limpopo – On Friday 15 November, a 25-year old man was arrested in Modimolle for the illegal possession of two rhino horns.  

Philemon Kobola was remanded in custody when he appeared before the Modimolle Magistrates’ Court on Monday 18 November. He is expected back in court on Monday 25 November facing a charge of illegal possession of rhino horns. 

Police spokesperson brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said community members approached the police after they had seen a man with two rhino horns at a local filling station.

“The suspect was approached, searched and they discovered the two rhino horns concealed in a plastic bag inside a backpack. The horns are valued at about R210 000,” he added.

According to the Department for Environmental Affairs (DEA), a total of 40 rhinos in the Limpopo province were killed by poachers in 2018.
