Suspected rhino poacher shot dead

Thabazimbi – A man linked to the killing of two rhinos at a game farm near Dorset outside Lephalale was shot dead during a confrontation with security guards. 

Police are tracking down two other suspected poachers who managed to escape during the confrontation, which occurred at around 3:00 on Tuesday 10 March.  

Moments before the confrontation, security officers at the game farm had heard gunshots and decided to travel towards the direction the shots were coming from. 

The guards encountered three men, one allegedly armed with a rifle. A scuffle ensued   as they attempted to apprehend the suspects.

One of the guards allegedly shot and killed one of the suspects in self defence.  

The other suspects managed to get away.  

Police who were called to the scene discovered an axe, a rifle with live ammunition as well as two rhino carcasses whose horns had been cut off.

Police are investigating a case of murder, rhino poaching and possession of an unlawful firearm and ammunition. 

“The identity of the deceased is still unknown at this stage,” police spokesperson brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said.
