Illegal structures demolished in Northam

Northam – Several illegal structures in Northam were demolished during a clean-up operation from Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 April.  

The initiative was carried out by the Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) in partnership with Northam Ratepayers Association (NRPA). It is part of the broader objective of making Northam one of the cleanest and environmentally-friendly towns. It encourages cleanliness and doing away with illegal structures scattered all over the central business district.

It took the NRPA two years to obtain a court order allowing them to carry out clean-up initiatives in and around Northam.

NRPA chairperson David Gouveia, who has been playing a leading role during all the clean-ups, said the latest exercise was a massive success. “If I look back at the past two years, I get a warm feeling. Northam is running like clockwork at last. Please remember that even the most expensive watches need to be wound up from time to time. We, as the NRPA, are extremely humbled by the whole process and how the TLM has handled this issue. We thank all the members of the NRPA and the community for standing by us and supporting our efforts,” he said.      

The next phase of the clean-up will focus on clearing up all illegal dumpsites.
