R10m aluminium cable bust, thieves nabbed

Brits – Two people were arrested in Mmakau near Brits on Monday 1 June for the possession of suspected stolen property and tampering with essential infrastructure.  

The two were caught with aluminium cable worth around R10 million after Mmakau police received a tip-off from Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) security personnel about illegal activities occurring at the premises of a scrap metal business in the area.   

“The police arrested the driver of the bakkie and the owner of the scrap yard after identification of the cables by PRASA technicians,” police spokesperson brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said.

Provincial commissioner of the police in the North West lieutenant general Sello Kwena commended the police and everyone involved in the operation for working together to apprehend the suspects.
