MEC Sambatha lauds SBPM’s COVID-19 compliance

Northam – North West Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for health Madoda Sambatha paid a visit to Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM) on Tuesday 2 June.

Sambatha commended SBPM for their dedication to manage the spread of COVID-19: “I am very impressed by their implementation of the regulations set in place. I can see that they are doing their best and I encourage them to keep up the good work.”

The visit follows a sudden spike of COVID-19 cases at mining companies. The mines have become hotspots for COVID-19 infections and all stakeholders agree that more effort is needed to curb the virus from spreading in mining communities.

“I am proud of the SBPM team who are working tirelessly to comply with the rules set in place. We are grateful to our employees who remain patient and I appreciate everyone’s effort to stay safe and healthy,” said SBPM General Manager Hobson Jantjies.

Said Sambatha: “It is important that the mining industry takes control and manages the recall of their employees. If they do not do this in a practical and effective manner, we may end up with a serious crisis.”

SBPM’s proactive approach to managing the COVID-19 pandemic has been hands-on and people centred. Management has considered and taken all reasonable steps to ensure that the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated risks to their employees, communities and to the company at large are effectively managed.
