Runaway fire in Rooikuilspruit

Thabazimbi – A runaway fire swept through Rooikuilspruit in Thabazimbi on Thursday 20 August. According to eyewitnesses, a few youngsters made a fire in the veld to cook a chicken, but things soon escalated when the fire spread through the dry veld.

The Thabazimbi Local Municipality’s firefighters and Thabazimbi Crisis Control Centre (TCCC) were called to assist.

Despite the fire spreading through a large area of the veld, nobody was injured and there were no damages to the surrounding buildings.

“The risk of runaway fires during this time of year is very high and for this reason, the fire ban was implemented at the beginning of July. During this fire-restriction period, no open-air fires are allowed, and we would like to call on the community to please adhere to this regulation,” said TCCC’s Henk Havenga.
