Police operations net over 1,800 suspects

Polokwane – A total of 1,849 suspects were arrested across Limpopo province for various offences ranging from rape, murder, business robbery, possession of illicit cigarettes to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects were caught during operations by the police crime prevention unit, K9 unit, crime intelligence unit, border policing as well as the Limpopo Highway Patrol Team (LHPT). Roadblocks involving vehicle searches, tracing of wanted suspects and other operations covering all districts of the province, including the Beitbridge border, were conducted by law enforcement agents.

Over 34,500 people and 20,052 motor vehicles were searched during the operations.

A total of 617 undocumented persons were amongst those arrested for various offences. Items confiscated during the operations included 16 firearms, a rifle, 6 suspected stolen motor vehicles, 10 cell phones, counterfeit cigarettes, dangerous weapons, cash, drugs as well as liquor.

Additionally, 2,031 fines were issued to motorists who contravened the Road Traffic Act while 68 shebeens were closed.
