Limpopo – Contact crimes and cases of malicious damage to property in the Limpopo province increased during the second quarter of the 2020/2021 financial year, according to the provincial crime statistics released on Thursday 10 December. 

Provincial commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo lieutenant general Nneke Ledwaba, pointed out that contact related crimes went up by 8.7% while malicious damage to property recorded a 10.9% increase. On a positive note, murder decreased by 14.7%, general sexual offenses by 9.3%, stock theft by 18.5% and residential burglary by 24.2%. 

Ledwaba acknowledged efforts by SAPS units in Limpopo and provincial chairperson of the community policing forum board, Frans Kgasago, for enhancing safety and security within communities. 

The overview of the crime statistics was focused on serious crimes such as murder, sexual offences, attempted murder, assault to do grievous bodily harm, common assault, aggravated robberies, arson, malicious damage to property, burglaries, theft of and out of motor vehicles, commercial crimes and theft in general.
