Burning tyres cause for concern

Northam – In an all too familiar scene, a cloud of black smoke covered the Northam sky on Tuesday 12 October.

The signs of tyres burning near the landfill could be seen from afar. When Platinum Bushvelder arrived on scene, there was not a soul in sight and the cause of the smoke was found to be a few tyres that was set alight… small but potent tyre fire. 

These fires can be seen in the area often and what might just seem like an insignificant fire can quickly spread, causing extreme damage. With the fire index for Northam still in orange, the burning of any open fires is not allowed.

The burning of tyres is also a great health risk as the emissions include chemicals that are extremely dangerous when inhaled. The darker the smoke, the more polluting and dangerous to health it tends to be. Dark to black smoke typically comes from burning plastic, rubber or cables.
