Sarah’s caring calling

Thabazimbi – Sarah Mawe has been caring for the old and frail since 1996. In an interview with Platinum Bushvelder, Sarah said that she recognised the need of the elderly who lived alone and had no one to take care of them, feed them, and help them with their medication.  

This moved Sarah to assemble a team of 20 volunteers who would assist the elderly around the Thabazimbi community. 

In 2005, Sarah registered the Thabazimbi Community Based Organisation (TCBO) as a non-profit organisation (NPO) at the Department of Social Development and has since been living her calling as a caregiver. 

As of date, TCBO has extended to caring for more than just the elderly and currently consists of 27 team members—all of which are volunteers—who help in areas such as auxiliary social work, childcare at Smashblock, and home-based care workers who give aid around the Skierlik and Thabazimbi areas. 

TCBO’s auxiliary social workers work with social behaviour change, the childcare workers work with orphans and vulnerable children, and the home-based care workers assist the elderly by preparing their food, cleaning their homes, feeding them, getting and administering their medication, and helping them with any other basic or special needs.
