Robin Hoods take the gold!

Thabazimbi – Thabazimbi is now home to two indoor archery world champions! Dr Gary Bauer and Hendrik Johannes (HJ) Swanepoel represented South Africa in Gillingham, Kent, in the United Kingdom from Monday 13 to Friday 17 February 2023.

It’s an enormous honour as 500 archers from 28 countries participated in the 2023 World Indoor Archery Competition (WIAC).

Dr Gary Bauer participated in the Veteran Male Freestyle Unlimited (VMFU) category. He was tenacious in his approach. Session one saw Gary in 12th position with a 297/300 score. The flint round (distances ranging from approximately 5-30 metres) had Gary fighting back with a score of 279/280 and grabbing the gold medal with a 300/300 score in his last session.

HJ Swanepoel held on to the first place in his category of Adult Male Freestyle Unlimited (AMFU) from day one. He never let go of his concentration.

This gave him a 300/300 score on day one. HJ Swanepoel had to really focus for the flint round as eight men were in the lead. However, he grabbed first spot with a 279/280 score, and he clinched the gold medal with 300/300 score on day three. Both also took gold in the team competition.
