A Blockbuster Vetkoek Day

Thabazimbi - On Monday 18 September 2023, Bosveldoord’s hall was alive with cheerful and the inviting smell of vetkoek. The Afrikaans Language and Culture Association (ATKV) Thabazimbi teamed up with Thabazimbi SAVF to host a special ‘Film and Vetkoek Day’ for the residents of Bosveldoord, Sonskynoord, and Huis Immergroen.  

Bosveldoord resident and former baker for the SAVF, Anna Fuls, shared: “Each year we look forward to the ‘Film and Vetkoek Day’. It’s our break from the usual, a day to come together and indulge in something different.”    

And indulge they did! With beverages in hand and plates filled with curry mince vetkoek, the attendees settled down to watch ‘Die Spook van Uniondale’. The heartwarming romantic comedy, peppered with characters like the charming Cornelius, played by Tobie Cronje, and the sinister Jan-Dawid portrayed by Andre Schwartz, left everyone on the edge of their seats. 

While the ATKV Thabazimbi generously funded this memorable day, SAVF contributed the screen and manpower to serve the delicious vetkoek. A bond forged over seven years, these two organisations have continually come together to craft such heartening events for the community. ATKV project manager and SAVF deputy chairperson, Linda Grobler, conveyed the deeper sentiment: “The elderly, our parents, and grandparents cared for us with endless love. I want to remind others that spending time with them, and learning from their wisdom is a treasure”.

While SAVF primarily focuses on child welfare, they also show great dedication towards the elderly. SAVF chairperson Annali Connear, said: “We visit elderly homes monthly, bringing treats and arranging activities like bingo and reading sessions. Some don’t have families left, so our engagement shows them that they’re still cherished”.

Community days like these remind us of the importance of togetherness and appreciation. In Thabazimbi, traditions and memories are not just maintained but celebrated with enthusiasm and excitement.
