Ford team triumphs in thrilling Waterberg 400 rally
The Waterberg 400, marking the grand finale of the 2023 SA Rally-Raid Championship, was a spectacle of skill and endurance. Held on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 of November, this challenging race not only tested the mettle of the drivers across diverse terrains but also brought a buzz of excitement and economic uplift to our area.
Starting at Koedoeskop Laerskool, a short distance from Northam, the race began with a 59-kilometre qualifying challenge on the first day, followed by two intense 178-kilometre laps the next day. The course’s varied landscape, from narrow paths through game farms to faster, open tracks, kept the drivers on their toes.
Amidst this heated competition, Gareth Woolridge and Boyd Dreyer of the Ford team clinched both the Overall Production Vehicle Championship and the FIA T1+ Championship in their formidable NWM Ford Castrol Ranger T1+. Overcoming initial setbacks like a flat tyre that placed them eighth in the starting lineup, the pair showcased resilience and skill. Despite the sweltering heat and challenging route, they emerged victorious with a time of 5 hours, 25 minutes, and 21 seconds, a clear lead over their nearest rivals.
Their triumph marked their third major win in what proved to be a demanding season. Their teammates Lance Woolridge and Kenny Gilbert also displayed commendable performance despite similar tyre woes. Other notable competitors included the Berthold-Köhne duo and the team of De Villiers and Murphy, with Lance Trethewey and Adriaan Roets braving a faulty air conditioner to secure fifth place.
In the Special Vehicle Category, seasoned competitors Geoff Minnitt and Rodney Burke took home the Class G title in their Hydro Power Equipment Can-Am Maverick, highlighting the diversity and depth of talent in this year’s championship. The race was not without its share of drama, as season champions Tim Howes and Gary Campbell had to withdraw following an unexpected encounter with a fence.
As the Waterberg 400 wrapped up, it left fans and participants alike with memories of a race that was as unpredictable as it was exhilarating, signalling a successful conclusion to the 2023 racing calendar.
