Brutal killing of magnificent beasts

Thabazimbi – A vigorous search is underway for unidentified individuals responsible for the killing and dehorning of two rhino at a local game reserve. According to police spokesperson colonel Malesela Ledwaba, this grim discovery was made by a ranger during his patrol on Tuesday morning, 20 February 2024, uncovering two rhino which had been fatally shot and stripped of their horns. This incident has since been escalated to the specialised Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit (STESU) for a comprehensive investigation.

Thabazimbi, a region that thrives on tourism, faces a significant economic threat from such heinous acts. 

The provincial commissioner of Limpopo Police, lieutenant general Thembi Hadebe, has called for the mobilisation of all available resources to apprehend and bring the culprits to justice.

The police are urging the community to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of those involved. Tips can be directed to warrant officer Cois van Deventer at 082 872 1741, the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111, or through the MySAPS app. As the investigation continues, the importance of community vigilance has never been more critical. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities or the Public Protection Services (PPS) of Thabazimbi. The collective efforts of the community, keeping an ear to the ground and an eye on their surroundings, are vital in combating wildlife crimes.
