Explore Marakele National Park free during SA National Parks Week

South Africans can enjoy free day entry to Marakele National Park from Monday, 7 September, to Sunday, 13 September 2026, as part of the 21st annual SA National Parks Week.

Situated just outside Thabazimbi in the heart of the Waterberg, Marakele offers visitors sweeping mountain scenery and the chance to spot some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife, including the Big Five.

One of the park’s must-see attractions is the spectacular Lenong viewpoint, situated 2,088 metres above sea level.

The self-drive journey rewards visitors with breathtaking views across the surrounding landscape, and perhaps even a glimpse of the wildlife that calls this remarkable sanctuary home.

The initiative aims to encourage South Africans to discover and take pride in the country’s protected natural and cultural heritage.

Marakele is one of the participating parks offering free access throughout the full seven-day period.

Free access applies to day visits and conservation fees only.

Accommodation, guided activities, game drives, commercial activities and other fee-based facilities are excluded.

Visitors must present valid South African identification at the gate, while identification is also required for children.

Entry remains subject to the park’s applicable conditions and capacity.
