TEACHERS  STRIKING

Thabazimbi – Local teachers based in and around Thabazimbi downed tools and rallied a strike action on Tuesday, 8 May. 

According to one of the teachers at the rally, “We want a 7.5% salary increase… Not the 6% that the government is offering us!” 

The teachers on strike belong to SADTU, the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union. According to one of their spokespersons at the rally, who wants to stay anonymous: “The reason we want more, is because VAT is now 15%. They have the budget for it! We cannot make a decent living on our wages.”  

The strike took place in front of the Department of Education’s offices in Thabazimbi. They could not be reached for comment.
