NW confirms a case of African Swine Flu 

NW – A registered outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Wilgeboom in a ZA-registered compartment (ZA10/20A) in Potchefstroom was reported on 9 April. The diagnosis was confirmed from tissue samples that were collected from a post-mortem that was conducted on the farm by a private veterinarian. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre was invited to participate as the situation was slowly developing to a crisis situation. South African Pig Producers Organization (SAPPO) assisted the farm during the outbreak in various ways. The Department is maintaining quarantine at the farm as a control measure.

Lephalale – On Wednesday 21 April, Platinum Bushvelder received reports of rocks being thrown at vehicles at the Medupi-Exxaro T-junction. Spokesperson for Eskom, Sikonathi Mantshantsha told Platinum Bushvelder: “Eskom can confirm that a group of approximately 150 people gathered in protest outside the Medupi power station to protest against the demobilisation of contractor employees as the project is coming to an end. The disturbances occurred outside the facility, with some of the people throwing rocks. The police brought the matter under control without any serious injury to people or damage to property. Operations continue as normal at the project. Eskom management is meeting with the contractors, the employees, and the community to address the matter.”

Existential crisis – Penises are shrinking

Human penises are shrinking because of pollution, warns scientist. In an article released on Sky News, Dr Shanna Swan states that humanity is facing an “existential crisis” in fertility rates as a result of phthalates, a chemical used when manufacturing plastics that impacts the hormone-producing endocrine system. Penises are shrinking and genitals becoming malformed because of pollution, she warned in a new book detailing the challenges facing human  reproduction. As a result of this pollution, a growing number of babies are being born with small penises, Dr Swan writes. One study published in 2017 found that sperm levels among men in Western countries had dropped by more than 50% over the past four decades after examining 185 studies involving close to 45,000 healthy men. Dr Swan believes that the rapidly decreasing fertility rate means that most men will be unable to produce viable sperm by 2045.
